The dirty little “secret” that most other races quietly discuss behind closed doors (and fully exploit at most opportunities) is that the white race, as a culture, has truly become its own worse enemy. Initial evidence of this can be found in the racially strategic error of supporting and participating in black slavery starting at least as far back as the early 1600s. Many years later, what now manifests is pervasive and growing “white guilt” from the slave master descendants. Importantly, the benefactors of this cultural guilt extend well beyond the black race and essentially now include all minorities. The selective eligibility of the Gates Scholarship Fund is yet another countless example of this manifestation. There is no irony therefore that whites will ultimately get what they deserve. And here’s what they get (at least specifically from the black race):
+ For every black woman raped by a white male, significantly more white women are raped by black males (and, most rapes of black females are by black males).
+ For every black assaulted/robbed/killed by a white, there are at least ten whites assaulted/robbed/killed by blacks (and, most blacks are assaulted/robbed/killed by other blacks).
+ White male inmates in prison are physically and **sexually** assaulted significantly more often by black male inmates than the other way around.
+ There are more blacks living by choice in predominately white neighborhoods than whites living by choice in predominately black neighborhoods. Wealthy blacks in particular tend to choose white neighborhoods over other minority areas.
In sum, most white people today are in fact spineless, guilty-feeling, conflict-avoiding, politically-correct drones (see “Bill and Melinda Gates”). However — perhaps, just perhaps, the pendulum will one day swing back the other way . . .

I taught at risk kids for many years, and 99% of my students were minorities, i.e. in the ethnic groups who would qualify for the Gates Millenium Scholarships. I can tell you that this scholarship has even more wrong with it than to explicitly exclude one ethnic group. The income guidelines are not flexible enough to accomodate the differences between different geographical areas and the amount of money needed in each to survive. The amounts are tightly set and just plain wrong. So, for example, I saw a brilliant African American male who wanted to become an engineer NOT qualify for a Gates Millenium Scholarship because he happened to be married to a grocery store cashier, and they made a small bit too much money as a couple for him to qualify. They were still so poor they couldn’t afford things like a used car or to go to any restaurant, ever. Everything they had went to rent and they lived in a very dangerous low income slum because that was all the rent they could afford. But they lived in an area where things were expensive, so they were stuck.
I know another student who DID qualify. She lied about everything in her Gates Millenium Scholarship, and succeeded in getting full room board and tuition at college. She gloated to me about how wonderfully her lies had worked and she said the Gates people checked nothing and didn’t care about checking–that was her impression, and this was her justification when I challenged her to come clean with them and be honest. She had claimed she was a single mother of two who earned very little money. The truth was that she had a religious marriage (not a legal one) and lived with her children’s father in a huge mansion in a rich part of town. Her extended family watched her children and she almost had nothing to do for them herself. She was able to show a very low income because she worked in her family’s business, which was to run a highly successful restaurant — so though she worked about five hours a week she could say whatever the Gates people wanted her to say, and most of her income was handed to her as a present, and in the form of nontraceable cash.
This and many other experiences with Gates “charity” has led me to believe this is a public relations ploy and nothing else.
It is a fact that the Gates Foundation was started when Gates was informed by a very highpriced tax attny that he could either pay 200 million in taxes, or start a foundation and pay zero in taxes. So they run this thing and pay zero taxes.
Gates is holding onto huge sums that no one person has any right to. If he spent one million dollars a day for every day of his life he’s still be mindbogglingly wealthy. This is a level of GREED that is just plain morally foul and very very wrong.
I know scientists who have been granted with many millions of Gates dollars for their research, and the same exact lack of checking and value prevails. If someone “looks” needy and has a minority sounding name they’ll have a shot at the money. If you’re saving the effing world but you’re not superficially jazzy… well, screw you.

I’m not sure if scholarships are covered in the Civil Rights Act. There are plenty of one-race-only scholarships that are considered perfectly legal. So, it probably is legal to have an everyone-but-whites scholarship, even if it is distasteful.

This kind of thing has been going on for years. I graduated high school in 1990 in the top 10% of my class with a 3.8 GPA and I couldn’t get a single scholarship. Every single minority of color got at least one scholarship, and the highest accumulative GPA was 3.0. The lowest was 1.8. Many of the white females received scholarships as well, though only two white males with a 3.9 and a 4.0 GPS received scholarships.
When I wasted four years of my life in the military because I had no money and went (underfunded) to college I distinctly recall that the ROTC at the University was giving full medical scholarships to whites and Asians as long as you maintained a 3.5 GPA. Non-medical whites and asians needed to maintain a 3.0 GPA. “Other” (IE black and hispanic) minorities only needed to maintain a 2.5 GPA for ANY field, including medical. Would you trust a doctor to operate on you that only needed to maintain a C average?
There are more white people than black people on welfare and below the poverty level; this decision is not only disgusting, but very sad. Poverty doesn’t discriminate, but Bill Gates does.

The ONE time I went to apply for food stamps because my husband had lost his job and we had two young children to feed with just my one income, I was informed that my income was $50 a month too much to qualify but that if I was a minority, I would have qualified because their income guidlines were higher than for non-minority. this was told to me by the minority social worker assigned to assess our case. So basically, it’s okay for white people to starve for a bit.

I am a native american. I have gone to school and I messed up during my sophmore year. I used to have a 4.0. but due to depression I lost it. I now have a 3.3 GPA. Most scholarships wont even consider me because of my low GPA. But I want to make something of my life. To be remembered for doing something for everyone regardless of race. I am not racist. This scholarship is my dream. My future and hope rests on it. without it I will have to go into the marines to pay for college. Thank you bill gates!

I am currently unemployed and even if I am, my salary would still not be enough to send them to a good school. My 7 year old and 6 year old are both honor students and I am really hoping for the best for them. I am really looking for a big heart person or an institution that could help my sons education. They are intelligent and full of potential. I hope you could help my sons.

Boycotting Microsoft now is kind of like closing the barn door after the horse is already out. The Gates Millennium Scholars Program (GMS), was established in 1999, when affirmative action was the norm and no one batted an eye or questioned whether it was no longer needed. Why is the National Policy Institute crying about racism now?

The eligible groups have poverty rates that greatly exceed the national average. According to the Institute for Research on Poverty, in the 90’s the poverty rates for blacks and hispanics were 3x the poverty rates of whites. I would think this is *exactly* the kind of charitable endeavor you would champion - primarily because it is private, not government run, and yet all of society benefits from educating these kids and giving them the tools they need to be productive members of our society.
I wonder: would President Hopenchange qualify? What about Homer Plessy? How many of your ancestors can be white before you get disqualified?
But, really, we’re all eligible, since we’re ALL — every single one of us — “African” Americans. It just depends upon when your ancestors vamoosed from the home continent.

It is truly a shame when a person regardless of race cannot get financial help to achieve their dream. I am ashamed of Bill and his cohorts who contrived this ridiculous scholarship excluding only one ethnicity.
It is disgusting to hold a person of ANY color out as being disqualified. This is supposed to be America. As long as the Jesse Jacksons, and Al Sharpton’s and idiots like Jimmy Carter, the Race Baiter, and Maxine Waters, and the like Racism will show it’s ugly face on both sides.

Keep them in dumb, stupid, in tenement houses, do not allow education, (By Buses instead, GM loves that) and what do you get at the end of the millennium, a lot of uneducated people, with no professional job skills, instead of educated people who may not be rich but should have has great schools, instead of a bunch of buses to move people around the deck with. Money spent on a Bus or a Tenement house never bought a book or built a classroom. I really believe that so many of the Blacks in charge of the Black Caucus, Democrats are totally responsible for the plight of the Blacks since the 60’s, What have they ever really done for the mass of Blacks in the US, but make them dependent on the Government instead of becoming strong independent minded people like Charles Payne on Fox Business, and many other Intelligent Blacks that decided not to follow the DEMOCRAT party line. Coming from a poor family where my father was finally able to start his own household moving company that lasted for 42 years…the company rarely thrived enough to even attempt to make us comfortable but he did work to raise his family, I only wish that there was a company that would have been willing to scholarship for my sisters and myself, there was no college money for any of us it was paycheck to paycheck and now I am living the same with my children, my white children who never ever did anything to the other races named eligible in this scholarship lets grow up America education shouldnt have lids or caps on it, make it available to ALL races of children..its time to get past this whole racist issue…I dont believe any foundation, company, charitable organization should be able to discriminate against anyone…this should be a one for all and all for one Nation…being divided teachs nothing
I am surprised at some of these comments. Gates has a right to choose where he donates money. I’ll bet some of you give money to specific churches, The Red Cross, Planned Parenthood and lots of other charities and schools, maybe even with restrictions about how the money is to be used. To say Gates should not be allowed to have all the money he has is socialism. The facts are that Gates has been very generous with his money, and almost all of his money will go to his foundation when he dies. Personally I would try to help any poor person trying to go to college or get technical training. My restriction would be to support kids who are “The Best and the Brightest.” Is that wrong, or should the government or NPI tell me how I must give away my money?
I don’t agree with Mr Gates points on this scholarship requirement and there are many scholarships out there (which is a wonderful thing) that require certain groups, race, ethnicity, etc.
I am concerned about how people post that the white race ‘does’ deserve reverse discrimination. I’m a white female (minority as well) and I don’t believe in slavery to any race. Pinpointing one race, one ethnicity, one religion — does the Holocaust ring a bell?? These statements that allow you to express your racism and your frustration with the white or any other race is not acceptable. No one deserves this. I don’t understand what happened 2000+ years ago of the people/group etc that thought a certain race should be in captivity and be put in slavery is beyond ALL of our control. Let’s move on like true adults should and let the past be what we grow from, what we become stronger for our future generations to come.

About the Gates’ foundation helping people in countries where Malaria is rampant, I find this ridiculous. They want us to believe that by supplying mosquito nets by the hundreds they are making a dent in the cases of Malaria, when in fact if they were championing the return of the use of DDT the mosquitos could be killed rather than given temporary obstacles. This is simply a way for them to make themselves look like the great philanthropers.

There are people out there including this administration that are trying to keep racism going either to gain votes or put a feather in their hat. What’s really important is that it is illegal to have scholarships that exclude anyone except whites. The issue isn’t Gates actions, it’s the institutionalized white-hating racism of the government and media. Wow! for many, many years I heard of “minorities discrimination” (specifically: Hispanic, Black, etc… population) but isn’t common to hear about “white discrimination”. Oh well, I personally believe this isn’t what it’s all about. I understand that the way he assigned his money it is his personal choice. However, I also understand those who are in need and do not qualify. Let’s stay focus and put aside our anger, they have done a great job through the years will all their charities. Even when I have personally applied for many scholarships and haven’t receive any positive answer I need to remind myself constantly it’s not personal. I’m in the same boat like many of you out there. In the other hand I’m really glad he is giving a hand to those kids (who ever they are) who would of never be able to make it without his help. Blessings come in many ways and in different “bunches”, we need to stop whining and become more grateful. I believe that when one door close is when many other doors will be open. I see Gates action as one of those “doors” that open to many others that had provably seeing many “doors close” when facing the possibility to go to college.
Truly unfair for such an educated man like Mr. Gates to restrict one group of teens from his scholorships. There are children in every race , creed, and ethinicity who need all the help they can get. As long as they meet the requirements of the scholorships, they should be considered for the award. These are the things that bring racial divide and tensions. Mr. Gates should reconsider. He’s smarter than this. Not to mention a possible prejudice suit.
What we must all understand is that white people who have middle class families have parents who ‘give them’ a head start. Bill Gates like other whites who realize that fact, are trying to offer non-whites a head start. For example; most white families have at least one college graduate in their families. History made it difficult for that to happen for non-white families. When a white couple has financial problems it’s not unusual for their parents to ‘help them out’ or invite them to move back home while they find a job. Non-whites are caught raising kids and helping their non-college educated parents who depend on them. Let’s get a grip and give Mr. Gates the right to choose whom he will help.

It is discrimination, plain and simple. How many of you would say “it’s his money, he can do what he wants with it” if Mr. Gates had a scholarship for White Anglo-Saxon men of Protestant religions? Bill Gates is not a racist. He is targeting low-income minority students who typically dont have the opportunity to go to college. I am a Gates Scholar and find your comments disgusting. White people do not know what discrimination is, and this is not it. Also, affirmative action does not exist to the extreme that it displaces White students. In fact, Only about 1% of White, qualified students are displaced by Affirmative Action. I went to a predominantly White university, only 7% minority. I wouldn’t have gone if it wasn’t for GMS. I was highly qualified, graduated cum laude and on the Dean’s list. I am sorry that you are all too ignorant to understand the reality of higher education.
I would like to start a new scholarship fund that will be available to anyone who is turned down by the Gates Foundation due to the color of their skin!

1. I am white, and have experienced discrimination. I simply choose not to make a song out of it.
2. The fact that ANY white students or workers are displaced by Affirmative Action is a type of discrimination in itself, if said student or worker was displaced solely on the basis of his or her race (read, ethnicity).
3. There’s no good reason why the Gates Foundation should not include low-income whites as well. Low income is low income, regardless of skin color. Financial struggles level the playing field beautifully; everyone needs to pay the rent.
4. I don’t think Bill Gates is racist, either, and frankly, it’s his foundation. He should be able to do whatever he wants with it. It just comes off as biased and ironic - that’s all. You said yourself that you wouldn’t have gone [to college] if not for GMS, so you got your helping hand and I’m glad for it. You applied yourself and received the honors you worked for, and it’s right that you did. That’s called “credit where credit is due”. But it’s wrong of you (and beneath you) and label people incapable of understanding the “reality of higher education”. The reality of it is this: It’s expensive. You got help. We’d like help, too.
Oh, and as long as I’m on it (in the interest of being fair and balanced and all that), I will give credit to Bill Gates for providing, directly and indirectly, the foundation for trainloads of technology jobs. Including mine.
