Video: Racial Tensions in Rochester Schools

This latest fight comes less than a week after a racially inspired altercation broke out at Owatonna High School. Students say it was between 20 Somali students and one white student.

Most ethnic Somali belong to one of six major clans, which are further divided into sub-clans and families. The clan is the basis of a person’s identity; loyalty to one’s clan is extremely important.

Racial tensions are rising within the Rochester School District.

The most recent incident took place this morning when a group of students erupted into a fight.

According to police that fight was between a group of Somalis and African Americans. It happened in the cafeteria.

Police say no weapons were used and no one was seriously injured.

School District Officials wouldn’t talk to us on camera, but did issue a statement. They say they are continuing to gather information about the fight, and that “student safety is their utmost concern.”

We also talked to the Somali Community Service Organization, which says violence is a problem that needs to be addressed before it gets worse.
