On February 23, the two top leaders of the Vlaams Belang party (VB) addressed a group of nearly 100 Americans in Arlington, Virginia. Now the largest party in Belgium, the VB is one of the most successful European political parties battling for immigration restriction and local autonomy. Party spokesman Philip Dewinter and chairman Frank Vanhecke stressed to an enthusiastic audience that their struggle is America’s struggle, that they are fighting for the preservation of Western Civilization everywhere. The meeting was organized by the Robert A. Taft Club, which brings speakers to the northern Virginia area.

Mr. Dewinter, who spoke first, immediately revealed his Confederate sympathies by saying how pleased he was to be speaking “on the good side of the Potomac River.” He opened with a salute to the “visionary” Patrick Buchanan, noting that the book Death of the West was a warning to all Western people. Europe, he said, is where the conflict is sharpest because the continent “is about to be taken over without a fight by people who are hostile to Western Civilization.” The newcomers are largely Muslim, with the effect that “Europe is gradually turning into Eurabia.”

Mr. Dewinter spoke of a serious demographic crisis, pointing out that average European lifetime fertility of 1.2 to 1.4 is far below the replacement rate of 2.2. Unless Europeans start having more children, the white population of the continent could drop from 738 million in 2005 to 606 million by 2050. Some countries will suffer more than others; Bulgaria, for example, is likely to lose 40 percent of its population. “We are living on a dying continent,” Mr. Dewinter warned, “but we are not dead yet.”

Muslims living in Europe, he said, have a lifetime fertility of 3.5, and this high birth rate combined with immigration of as many as two million non-Westerners a year could spell the end of the West as we know it. No one is sure exactly how many Muslims live in Europe, but estimates run from 15 to 50 million, and since 2000, Mohammed has been the most common boy’s name in Brussels, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam. Mr. Dewinter quoted Libya’s Muammar al-Gaddafi who, citing the highest estimate, predicted that “the 50 million Muslims in Europe will turn Europe Islamic in a few decades.” This is, indeed, the fate the VB works to prevent. “Islam is a primitive religion,” said Mr. Dewinter, that could “lead Europe back to the Dark Ages.”

The opposition in the House of Commons is like a pack of wolves, constantly on the lookout for weakened ministers. Falter and the pack will turn on you, as Rona Ambrose will testify.

This week, the Liberals targeted Diane Findley, the Immigration Minister, whom they have identified as one of the weaker members of the government herd. On Tuesday, the Grits asked 13 questions related to Ms. Findley or her department, on issues ranging from the hundreds of “lost Canadians,” whose citizenship is in doubt, to her limousine expenses.

Yesterday, the Liberals sought to reinforce their credentials as the natural party of new Canadians by introducing a motion that painted Ms. Findley and the Conservatives as indifferent to, and ignorant about, immigrant communities.

Liberal MP Andrew Telegdi was scathing about the Immigration Minister after she made her speech in the House. “She was reading a speech prepared for her by bureaucrats. She doesn’t know what she’s talking about,” he said, urging Prime Minister Stephen Harper to replace her with Diane Ablonczy, who was immigration critic while in opposition.

Omar Alghabra, the Liberal immigration critic, accused the government of lacking vision and a plan. “Unfortunately, the negligence is exacerbated by a negative attitude that the Conservatives have toward minorities and immigrants,” he said. “Incompetence is compounded with a negative historical attitude that is rampant among the Conservative benches. We frequently see glimpses of the Reform-Alliance ghost rear its ugly head and raise alarm levels among immigrants.”

With schools under increasing pressure to improve test scores, Mount Diablo High School has resorted to a new way to motivate students: by race.

The Concord campus on Friday held separate assemblies for students of different ethnicities to talk about last year’s test results and the upcoming slew of state exams this spring.

Jazz music and pictures of Martin Luther King greeted African-American students, whereas Filipino, Asian and Pacific Islander students saw flags of their foreign homelands on the walls. Latinos and white students each attended their own events, too, complete with statistics showing results for all ethnicities and grade level.

“They started off by saying jokingly, ‘What up, white people,’” said freshman Megan Wiley, 14. Teachers flashed last year’s test scores and told the white crowd of students to do better for the sake of their people.

“They got into, ‘You should be proud of your race,’” Wiley said. “It was just weird.”

At the party convention in Lille, he said he would halt immigration and integration with the European Union.

It is his fifth and probably last bid for the presidency, and correspondents say he has little chance of winning.

Mr Le Pen came a surprise second in the 2002 race, but is currently trailing in the opinion polls.

The 78-year-old politician arrived on stage to chants of “Le Pen, president!” and launched into an attack on the whole French political class who he blamed for leading the country to ruin, says the BBC’s Jonathan Marcus in Lille.

He told 2,000 supporters that the situation in France was “catastrophic”.

“There can not be any economic reform nor a return to growth without putting a halt to uncontrolled immigration of all the miserable people of the planet who are coming to compete with our impoverished workers,” he said.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers conducting security inspections at the Calexico, Calif., port of entry arrested a Mexican national after finding an illegal Chinese alien hidden in the engine compartment of the vehicle he was driving into the United States.

The failed entry, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials said, was the second at the Calexico port in less than a week in which a smuggler sought to bring a Chinese national into the United States in the same manner and the third this month at the port involving an attempt to smuggle a Chinese migrant into the country.

CBP officials offered no theory on why Chinese nationals had focused on the Calexico port of entry.

The driver, identified only as a 27-year-old Mexican citizen, presented a valid border crossing card at the downtown port of entry but was referred during the Feb. 16 incident to a secondary inspection area after CBP officers said he appeared to be nervous.

During that inspection, CBP spokesman Vincent E. Bond said, officers discovered what appeared to be a piece of wood under the front bumper and, after removing the front grill, found a woman lying in a non-factory compartment forward of the engine. He said the officers opened the compartment and eventually freed the woman.

Federal authorities have accused three cleaning company executives of pocketing more than $18.6 million in unpaid taxes collected from employing hundreds of illegal immigrants from Mexico, Central America, and Haiti, according to an indictment CNN obtained Thursday.

The money was placed by the three Rosenbaum Cunningham International executives into “shell companies,” and then was used to purchase such “extravagant” items as beach homes and racehorses, the document stated.

RCI Inc.’s president, vice president and controller were arrested along with 200 of the Florida-based company’s employees in a recent sweep by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, the assistant secretary of homeland security for ICE, Julie Myers, announced at a news conference.

A message on the company’s voicemail said that “RCI has ceased operations as of February 22, 2007.”

The employees were arrested in 17 states and the District of Columbia late Wednesday into Thursday as they were starting or leaving their shifts, Myers said.

They face various immigration violations and could be deported, she said.

The sweep stems from a 20-month investigation by ICE agents sparked by the arrest of an illegal alien in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Myers said.

The executives will be charged with 23 counts, including conspiracy to defraud and harboring illegal immigrants.

THE far right candidate John Moffat has denied he put out a leaflet demanding the removal of Muslim lifesavers from North Cronulla and accusing “Islamic supremacists” of incest.

But Mr Moffat said many Cronulla people would incline towards the views expressed in the leaflet bearing his name.

Mr Moffat, Australia First’s only candidate in the state election, is standing for Cronulla and called for an end to the multicultural “nightmare” he said was afflicting the area.

The Liberal Party will hold a state council meeting in Cronulla tomorrow - a key campaign event that signals the significance the area has for the party, which holds the seat with a comfortable 8 per cent majority.

The pamphlet delivered to letterboxes in Cronulla yesterday called for the axing of a campaign to encourage the integration of Muslim surf lifesavers at Cronulla, a project it describes as a “monstrosity”.

Mr Moffat said that while he did not put out the pamphlet, it was “ludicrous” that the Federal Government was paying $600,000 for the “On the Same Wave” Muslim lifesaving initiative.

WASHINGTON The percentage of poor Americans who are living in severe poverty is the highest in thirty years, in which millions of working Americans are falling closer to the poverty line, and the gulf between this country’s ”haves” and ”have-nots” gets wider.

The McClatchy Company - owners of the Miami Herald – a CBS4 news partner - went through an analysis of 2005 census figures, the latest available, and found that nearly 16 million Americans are living in deep or severe poverty.

A family of four, with two children and an annual income of less than $9,903 — half the federal poverty line — was considered severely poor in 2005. So were individuals who made less than $5,080 a year.

At the same time, economists found worker productivity increasing sizeably since the brief recession of 2001, but wages and job growth have lagged behind. The share of national income going to corporate profits has dwarfed the amount going to wages and salaries. Median household income of working-age families, adjusted for inflation, has fallen for five straight years.

The leader of a Dutch anti-immigration party will call for a vote of no-confidence in two Muslim government ministers next week, citing their dual nationality as the issue, a newspaper reported on Saturday.

Geert Wilders said in an interview with the Dutch daily NRC Handelsblad the appointment of Moroccan-born Ahmed Aboutaleb and Turkish-born Nebahat Albayrak as junior ministers was wrong because both could have loyalties toward countries other than the Netherlands.

Wilders, whose Party for Freedom (PVV) party won 9 seats out of 150 in the November election, said he will call for a no-confidence vote when the cabinet discusses its policy plans in parliament.

The new cabinet, formed by Christian Democrats, Labour and the Christian Union and sworn in on Thursday by the Dutch queen, is expected to soften immigration policy, which had been tightened under the previous coalition in response to the rise of the populist Pim Fortuyn in 2002.

Maverick politician Fortuyn broke taboos with his criticism of Muslim immigrants before he was murdered by an animal rights activist.
